Support for students in demanding life situations

The Kassel Stipendium is a support program offered by the Studierendenwerk Kassel and has been awarded since the 2023/24 winter semester to students at the University of Kassel who are successfully completing their studies despite facing unique personal circumstances.

In the fourth funding cycle, 2026/27, we once again aim to use the Kassel Scholarship to support students with a migrant or refugee background whose parents did not attend a university in Germany.
The support is both financial and non-financial. The goal is to assist young people who, despite challenging circumstances, demonstrate exceptional academic performance and exhibit not only academic but also social skills.

In addition to the monthly financial support of 200 euros each, the scholarships also serve to connect students with the regional economy, enable them to participate in events as part of a scholarship network, offer them educational opportunities on topics relevant to them personally, and help them build professional networks.

In doing so, the Kassel Student Services is following the example of a highly successful nationwide program: the “Hamburg Stipendium” offered by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg.

The Kassel Stipendium thrives on scholarship recipients’ participation in meetings and activities.

For the 2026/2027 funding year, you may apply from April 13 through May 31 if you meet the following requirements:

  • You have a migration or refugee background (the exact definition can be found in the award guidelines [German language only]).
Please note: The scholarship is not intended for international students (§ 16b AufenthG).
  • Your parents did not attend a university in Germany,
  • You demonstrate above-average academic performance despite having to cope with challenging life circumstances,
  • You are enrolled at the University of Kassel,
  • You can demonstrate financial need,
  • You speak multiple languages,
  • You are involved in volunteer work.
